Madara national historical archaeological reserve

A visit to the Madara National Historical Archaeological Reserve.

This site is located on the slopes of the Madara plateau, 17 km northeast of Shumen. The region is densely scattered with ruins from every epoch, bearing traces of different cultures and artifacts from every tribe and group to have passed through or lived in the area. That is why the first people to conduct research there called it the "Bulgarian Troy". The "Madara Rider" is an undeniably unique relief sculpture carved 23m above the base of a smooth rock formation. It is a majestic Bulgarian work of artistic ingenuity. Inscriptions carved around the sculpture make it part of the Old Bulgarian stone archive from the earliest period of the Bulgarian nation, from the 7th to the 9th centuries. The Madara Rider is included in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites.
