A visit to the town of Veliki Preslav

23 km to the southwest of Shumen lie the ruins of Bulgaria's second capital, Veliki Preslav. The city was founded in 821 by Khan Omurtag, though the zenith of its material and spiritual wealth was reached under Tsar Simeon. Testifying to this are the exquisite mosaics, capitals and ornaments made of silver and gold from this period which were unearthed during archaeological excavations of the famed "Golden Church". The archaeological museum contains unique exhibits, the most famous of which are the ceramic icon of Theodore Stratelates, dated to the 10th century, and renowned gold treasure.
